Dungeons And Dragons: Thursday’s first panel at San Diego Comic-Con was “Dungeons And Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” which featured a fantasy teaser and a plethora of A-list celebrities.
Chris Pine, who has blonde hair that is cut to the chin, Hugh Grant, Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, and Michelle Rodriguez all entered the stage to thunderous ovation. Two segments from the incomplete movie, which was filmed in Northern Ireland when the UK was under COVID lockdown, were shown to the audience in addition to the trailer. Grant claimed the film had a “Monty Python flavor,” while Pine said it has “a Spielbergian energy about it.”, dungeons and dragons.
Pine (as a bard), Rodriguez (as a barbarian), Justice Smith (a sorcerer), and Lillis (as a druid) are shown in the teaser as a group of thieves who are trying to undo an error that caused a tremendous evil to be released onto their country. They come across a variety of exotic animals, including Page, a rakish knight who (appears to) accompany them on their mission.
However, the “Dungeons And Dragons” video has a considerably more jovial and lighter tone, highlighted by the closing shot of Pine joyously plucking his lute, in contrast to the sombre and dramatic trailers for recent fantasy series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” and “House of the Dragon.”
The actors are wandering through a labyrinth while a few other teams attempt to escape in one of the lengthier films (only aired at Hall H). The film, according to writer-director John Francis Daley, has several monsters and other creatures in addition to numerous spells. To make sure the backstory was accurate, the producers collaborated with the game publisher Wizards of the Coast, dungeons and dragons.
Additionally, the film showed a gelatinous cube and a displacer beast, which is essentially a panther that can project its own image (and deadly). The filmmakers hinted that the movie has several “D&D” Easter eggs in addition to at least one appearance by a well-known “D&D” player.
The actor playing Edgin in the movie, Pine, said that he wasn’t a major “D&D” player but that his 13-year-old nephew was. The movie, in his words, “feels open, light, and effervescent.”
Regarding his whole family interacting with his nephew, he said, “It was an incredible thing to watch all my family light up in that manner. After three hours, you had forgotten that you didn’t want to. It had gradually become worse.
It’s a game that ought to be played in every high school in the country, according to Pine. No one will remember what class the bully and the jock came from, I promise (of course, I’m just speaking in John Hughes terms).
I merely wanted to spread the “D&D” word,” he said in his conclusion.
While saying, “You don’t grow up in Jersey without playing D&D,” Rodriguez
It brought back many childhood memories of her and her pals having fun in a basement, she said. “I believe more people should play role-playing games since they are wonderful,”
To portray the barbarian Holda, Rodriguez put on ten pounds of muscle.
Page, who plays the character of Xenk, a paladin, said that he was always “D&D adjacent,” favoring “Chrono Trigger” and “Diablo.”
Page referred to the social misfit and “D&D” lover Eddie Munson from Season 4 of “Stranger Things” and remarked, “I essentially grew up like Eddie Munson.” “I have some knowledge of escapist imagination that has no boundaries.”
For the movie, Page also underwent rigorous training, which included sword and stance practice.
He replied, “I had the finest ass in my life and my thighs were hurting me.
Teen Lillis was such a die-hard devotee of the game that she drove back to her former high school for the “D&D” club after relocating 20 minutes away.
Rodriguez made a joke in response to moderator Karl Jacobs’ statement that his notes show Grant has always been a huge “D&D” enthusiast, saying, “I guess you confused it up with S&M.”, dungeons and dragons.
Hugh retorted, to the roaring hilarity of his cast mates and the audience, “She’s not incorrect.” I’ve long been a passionate dungeon master. The British like doing that. nearly a national sport. I think the Jonathans chose me for this because of it. Grant will portray Forge Fletcher, a rogue.
The cast also includes Jason Wong, Daisy Head, and Chloe Coleman.
Before the cast appeared, Jacobs, a Twitch streamer and co-host of the podcast “Banter With Sapnap and Karl Jacobs,” presented a behind-the-scenes segment that had a number of technical issues.
“Looking at your faces helps us remember why we do this. Jonathan Goldstein, the event’s writer and director, thanked everyone for attending.
“Dungeons And Dragons” is something that both Goldstein and his brother have experience with; they used to play the first edition with his brother, who “always murdered” him.
Daley discovered “D&D” because his Freaks and Geeks character, who loved the game, was a fan of it. “Playing the game gives you a certain emotion, it’s not simply a game,” he remarked.
The session was introduced by Comic-Con International’s director of programming, Eddie Ibrahim.
We haven’t been in this room together in three years. Before promoting the Paramount Pictures event, Ibrahim stated.
The film is based on the well-known tabletop role-playing game, which lets players design their own wizards, warriors, monks, and other heroes to battle various fantasy creatures, trolls, necromancers, and a plethora of other foes. The popularity of the game has lately increased as a result of programs like Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and the online series “Critical Role,” which was adapted into the animated series “The Legend of Vox Machina” on Amazon Prime Video.
Variety did a detailed investigation into a Joe Manganiello-hosted celebrity “Dungeons And Dragons” campaign in 2020 that included Vince Vaughn, Tom Morello, “Game of Thrones” co-creator D.B. Weiss, and other celebrities.
The movie was directed by Goldstein and Daley, who also scripted “Horrible Bosses,” “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2,” and “Vacation Friends” in addition to the 2018 smash comedy “Game Night.” From Michael Gilio’s story with Chris McKay, Goldstein, Daley, and Michael Gilio wrote the script. With executive producers Denis L. Stewart, Goldstein, Daley, Pine, Zev Foreman, and Greg Mooradian, the project is produced by Jeremy Latcham (who was also present), Brian Goldner, and Nick Meyer.
The movie “Dungeons And Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” which opens in cinemas on March 3, 2023, is produced by Entertainment One and Sweetpea Entertainment.
