The long-running football franchise will undergo some interesting changes with the release of FIFA 23.
The game that will signal the end of an era for EA is FIFA 23. It was previously suggested that FIFA 22 may be the last FIFA game, but it has now been officially announced that EA Sports is terminating its 30-year partnership with FIFA(opens in new tab). Making FIFA 23 is the last title in the series under the FIFA moniker; moving forward, it will be known as EA Sports FC.
However, it seems that EA is keen to end the name on a high note. EA has confirmed that the game would include cross-play, the World Cup, the Women’s World Cup, and, for the first time, women’s club teams now that it has been formally announced.
With a release date of September 30, we can expect to learn a lot about FIFA 23’s new features, Career Mode, and Ultimate Team during the next months. Find out all we currently know by reading on.

A brand-new trailer for FIFA 23 was released in July 2022, revealing the game’s September release date as well as some of its intriguing new features. Watch it for yourself down below.
COVER STARS FOR FIFA 23
Sam Kerr and Kylian Mbappe have been unveiled as the FIFA 23 cover stars by EA.
Mbappe will serve as the highlight of FIFA 23’s Standard Edition for the third straight year. With the exception of Australia and New Zealand, where Sam Kerr of Australia and Chelsea will be the cover hero of the game’s Standard Editions.
Mbappe and Kerr will both be included in the game’s Ultimate Edition, however. This is the first time an international female cover star will be featured for the series.
GAMEPLAY FOR FIFA 23
For those who are used to playing the game and its yearly release, FIFA gameplay at this point is rather recognizable. Having saying that, FIFA 23 will include some rather important gameplay adjustments.
The cross-play is the most crucial of them. EA has officially announced that the feature will be included in FIFA 23 and will be accessible from launch after it was first presented for testing in FIFA 22.
EA has confirmed(opens in new tab) that it would be “expanding on the availability of cross-play to additional game modes for FIFA 23, as well as extending the number of participating platforms.” Cross-play was tested in Online Friendlies and Online Seasons in FIFA 22.
Cross-play will thus “be accessible for players on the same platform generation in FIFA 23.” FIFA 23 will include cross-play compatibility with PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S versions in addition to PC and PlayStation 4 versions.
At launch, the feature will be accessible in FUT Division Rivals (apart from Co-Op), FUT Champions, FUT Ultimate Online Draft, FUT Online Friendlies (apart from Co-Op), FUT Play a Friend, Online Friendlies, Online Seasons (apart from Co-Op Seasons), and the competitive game mode known as the Virtual Bundesliga, which is accessible to players based in Germany.
Cross-play will be initially enabled for all players when the game is first released, according to EA, but you may choose to disable it at any moment.
The Barclays FA Women’s Super League and Division 1 Arkema will be included in FIFA 23 at launch, marking the first time in EA SPORTS FIFA history that women’s club football will be included in a game.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2023 and the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022 will both be included in the game as “post-launch content upgrades at no extra cost.” Later in the summer, further details will be released about the participation of women’s teams in these competitions.
EA is also making a big deal out of their HyperMotion2 technology for versions on the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Stadia. EA claims that “twice as much actual match data collection,” which will “push FIFA 23 to over 6000 true-to-life football animations,” will improve upon the initial edition. According to EA, further details on this and other gameplay enhancements will be released “soon.”
There will be enough to explore in the game with “19,000+ players, 700+ teams, 100 stadiums, and 30+ leagues,” according to a post on the official PlayStation blog(opens in new tab).
NEWS AND RUMOURS FOR FIFA 23
According to reports, EA is hindered by the FIFA license.
Before it was confirmed that EA and FIFA were parting ways, a report from VGC(opens in new tab) claimed that EA’s CEO, Andrew Wilson, elaborated on the reasons behind the choice at an internal meeting and supplied the outlet the remarks anonymously.
At the time of the article, EA had only hinted that it would break away from FIFA for their lineup of football games, but we now know that is really happening. The men’s and women’s competitions from the FIFA World Cup will be included in the game for the first time, according to VGC, which said in its report that it “understands EA is presently intending to release this year’s game as FIFA 23.”
According to the article, Andrew Wilson suggested to EA staff members that leaving FIFA may be advantageous. Wilson allegedly said, “I would say, and this may come out as a bit prejudiced, that the FIFA brand has more importance as a video game than it does as a regulatory organization of soccer.” “We strive not to be haughty and we don’t take it for granted. We’ve put a lot of effort on getting FIFA to understand what we need from them going forward.
In a world when most consumers no longer ever see the box since they purchase the game online, all we really receive from FIFA in a year when there is no World Cup are the four letters on the front of the box.
Wilson said, “EA’s partnership with FIFA has been a “impediment” when it comes to expanding the games and introducing new features,” according to the article. He says it has been a battle to get FIFA to acknowledge the kinds of things we want to create because they claim our license only covers certain categories. He mentions being unable to add new brands like Nike “because FIFA has a relationship with Adidas” and being unable to add player-requested new modes of play and “different things beyond 11v11.”
WHAT ABOUNDS FIFA 23?
The FIFA name-branded video game series will end with FIFA 23.
EA Sports announced in May 2022 that it would be terminating its 30-year collaboration with FIFA in an official blog post(opens in new tab). The series will be renamed as EA Sports FC starting in 2023. Therefore, FIFA 23 should still have the name we are all familiar with when it is released in 2022.
In terms of the game that people will be playing, EA doesn’t appear to anticipate much changes other from this name change.
EA Sports executive Cam Weber noted in a blog post that “everything you love about our games will be part of EA Sports FC – the same incredible experiences, modes, leagues, tournaments, clubs, and players.” “There will include Volta Football, Pro Clubs, Career Mode, and Ultimate Team.
“With the release of EA Sports FC, our distinctive license portfolio, which includes more than 19,000 players, 700 teams, 100 stadiums, and 30 leagues, will still be available. This includes unique relationships with the MLS, Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga, Premier League, and more to come.”
More details about EA Sports FC are anticipated to be unveiled in the summer of 2023, although EA has already provided some background information(opens in new tab).
CEO Andrew Wilson said, “Our ambition for EA Sports FC is to establish the biggest and most influential football club in the world, at the hub of football fandom. “We’ve been creating the largest football community in the world for over 30 years, with hundreds of millions of players, tens of thousands of athlete partners, and thousands of leagues, federations, and teams. For everyone of them as well as football fans globally, EA Sports FC will be the team.
“We are appreciative of our many years of wonderful cooperation with FIFA. Worldwide football has a very bright future, and there has never been a bigger global fan base. We have a fantastic potential to make EA Sports FC the center of the sport and to provide the expanding football audience with even more cutting-edge and genuine experiences.”
