Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Motokano datta, Despite the fact that the plot seems like hot rubbish, I have a weakness for romantic comedies. It seems that way with the movie My Stepmother’s Daughter is My Ex (Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Motokano datta). This entire stepsiblings in love scenario has been done before, but there appeared to be a twist in this one. Can this actually differentiate itself and do something that shows like this are unable to do? For want of a better phrase, is this not a hot crap guilty pleasure? Let’s Move!
After their parents remarried, Mizuto and Yume now find themselves as siblings. They had a relationship before getting married, but they ended it because they couldn’t stand one another. They now have to hide their background from their parents while putting up a show for them, Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Motokano datta.
We are introduced to them fighting about little issues right away, such who should be considered the elder sister. Since Yume was born on the same day as Mizuto and 34 minutes earlier, it is technically Yume (which I found to be a rather cheap plot device). Then Mizuto had the audacity to debate about how they decided which brother was the eldest in ancient Japan. Just for the purpose of “comedy,” it seems like pretty bad writing to cover up an apparent solution.
While they go to their first day of high school, Mizuto learns that some males like Yume and are just using him to get to her. This information comes to light as Yume is making friends. For the purpose of moving on to creating some tension between the two once they are at home alone, the plotline simply kind of fades away and is ignored. Yume attempts to pick on Mizuto, but they wind up nearly falling in love before their parents’ timely arrival, Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Motokano datta.
This is essential because the whole episode establishes the central idea—that the two of them will play a game where they must pretend to be a brother and sister, and if one of them fails to do so, they will incur a fault. Even though technically Yume should be the one to recognise the other as the elder brother and address them as such, the player with the most faults at the conclusion of the game must do so, Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Motokano datta.
MAYBE – Although the writing in the first episode was a little illogical, it wasn’t as bad as I had anticipated. There were some lovely moments, but the balance has to be greater. It’s strange when two people go between hating one other, like each other, tolerating each other, and then behaving like caring siblings sometimes. It seems that the program was searching for its identity rather than developing it, Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Motokano datta.
This program won’t win any prizes, but it could be an excellent way to pass the time, which is why I’m giving it a MAYBE rather than a NO. I want to hold out just long enough to see whether the program can live up to its promise since I can see it here.
