Overlord IV, With a new teaser and poster, Overlord has announced the anime’s Season 4 release date! While the third season of the anime adaptation of Kugane Maruyama and so-original bin’s light novel series concluded in 2018, it wasn’t until early this year that a fourth season of the show was officially announced to be in the works. This spring, it was revealed that the anime will return for a whole fourth season and a brand-new feature film to be released, Overlord IV.

While there may not have been any details on this potential film project as of yet, fans of Season 4 of the anime received a major update when it was announced that Overlord would be returning for a new season at some point in 2019. Unfortunately, there isn’t a specific date outside of the hazy 2022 release frame, but to mark the occasion, the show has unveiled a brand-new trailer and season poster. For the new season at Studio Madhouse, director Naoyuki Itou, series writer Yukie Sagawara, and character designer Satpshi Tasaki all made prior seasons’ work their careers. For the fourth season, a recurring cast has also been revealed. Satoshi Hino will play Ains Ooal Gown, Yumi Hara will play Albedo, Sumire Uesaka will play Shalltear, Emiri Kato will play Aura, Yumi Uchiyama will play Mare, Masayuki Katou will play Demiurge, and Kenta Miyake will play Cocytus.

Since the third season of the anime adapted content from Volumes 7-9 of the original light novels and the upcoming film is confirmed to be adapting the Holy Kingdom arc from Volume 12, it is assumed that Season 4 will be adapting Volumes 10 and 11. However, this hasn’t been officially confirmed (outside of the looks at some of the new faces in the trailer). Outside of the prior announcement that it would be released when the fourth season ultimately airs, there hasn’t been any information on the new movie’s official release either, Overlord IV

Why is the release date for Overlord Season 4 in the summer of 2022?

With early Blu-Ray sales, the third season actually performed much better financially than the second season. Only Incredibles 2 surpassed it on the Oricon rankings when Volume 2 was published in December 2018.

In light of this, one may argue that the anime production committee never had a good basis to cancel the fourth season. In 2019, we made a prediction that the fourth season of Overlord may not premiere until 2021. The absence of sources was the main problem at the time.

Maruyama provided an explanation for the delay in publication of the books in a 2017 interview.

“I divided the [story arc] into two volumes since I anticipated it would be lengthy. You’ll have to wait a little while since the timetable isn’t fixed in stone, he remarked.

It’s possible to argue that Madhouse might have hurried the anime’s tempo, omitted a lot of information on side characters from the novels, and attempted to pack the four books from volumes 10 through 13 into a single season with 13 episodes. Another noteworthy fact is that Madhouse is working on Overlord Season 4. It’s definitely a delight that the anime studio produced four seasons since they’re not exactly renowned for creating sequels.

The date of the Overlord: Holy Kingdom movie has ultimately had the largest impact on the release of the fourth season. While January and February are often regarded as the “dump months” for subpar movies, November through December and May through July are generally seen to be the greatest times for a tentpole movie to have a shot at making a blockbuster launch, Overlord IV
