Superman, The rumored return of Henry Cavill as Superman may potentially shift attention from the directionless MCU to the DCEU.
Superman hasn’t had a significant part in the DC Extended Universe outside of Zack Snyder’s Justice League for a time. To the dismay of fans and even CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David Zaslav, the figure has been mostly unutilized, shocking all parties. Unfortunately, the reports that Cavill will be reprising his Man of Steel role at this year’s Comic-Con were untrue, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t the appropriate course of action.
The DCEU would regain some of its forward momentum with the planning of further Superman appearances and feature films, something the shared universe has lacked often. Additionally, because the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now in its own rut, doing so would advance the DCEU ahead of it. Warner Bros. preparation for Henry Cavill’s comeback would give the DCEU new life, whether or not it is shortly to be disclosed.
The DC Extended Universe Is Awaiting Superman
There is no disputing that Henry Cavill was destined to portray Superman, despite the intense controversy surrounding Man of Steel and particularly Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Given his striking resemblance to the role and his interest in playing him on film, it is a shame on the part of WB that he hasn’t really had another opportunity. He could make a significant appearance in the forthcoming movie Black Adam, particularly because its star Dwayne Johnson wants to face him in a confrontation.
Similar to the fight between Godzilla and Kong in the MonsterVerse, the buildup to a three-way fight between Superman, Black Adam, and Shazam could be huge for the DCEU’s enthusiasm and intrigue. Even with The Flash’s extremely speculative happenings, the DCEU is presently not leading up to anything, thus finally having this kind of thing to look forward to will just heighten the excitement. Additionally, it would be far more effective than the creation of the Justice League in this realm, which many people felt was hurried into.
Any current MCU plans would be eclipsed by Henry Cavill’s Superman comeback
There isn’t much that spectators can expect from the MCU in the long run, save from the X-Men and the mutants being ultimately introduced. Additionally, with the main attractions in doubt, people are anticipating every MCU initiative with bated breath. Particularly now that Sony is stepping up the development of its Spider-Verse live-action films, Spider-Man is more of a Sony figure. Iron Man and the original Captain America are also no longer around. The ridiculous joke that Thor has evolved into is becoming old to audiences, and the Hulk shares Spider-legal Man’s predicament. The DCEU finally has an opportunity to overcome the MCU since morale, box office, and reception are all declining.
Even if they’ve used all their major stars, DC still has Superman to fall back on. Any non-mutant ambitions Marvel has in the works would be easily overshadowed by getting him right and treating him with the respect he deserves. Similar to how fans and detractors of Zack Snyder’s films, many of whom agreed that Cavill did well with what he had, would be won over if Cavill returned to portray the role. Having popular portrayals of the Man of Steel on all platforms would only serve to highlight the fact that Warner Bros. Discovery places a high importance on the character and the franchise given how popular Superman and Lois is now on The CW and HBO Max. The greatest moment to make it happen is right now, and releasing this strategy to the public would offer DCEU fans what Superman is meant to inspire: optimism.
